Most One Piece sets introduce six new Leader cards, and this set is no exception to the rule. While the Leader cards in this set have pretty plain artwork for their regular prints, each of the Alternate Arts showcases them with a character who taught them, or a character they taught themselves. That really lends into the theme of this set, and it makes for some gorgeous card arts throughout.
At the time of writing not all of the English print Leaders have been officially revealed, so we’ll be using the Japanese versions as stand-ins for the time being. The art will be the same, don’t worry!
The first three Leaders coming our way are Silvers Raleigh, Donquixote Rosinante, and Koala. All three of them mentored someone important in the series, so we’re going to highlight them first: Raleigh taught Luffy how to use all the different types of Haki during the two-year timeskip; Rosinante taught Trafalgar Law how to be a person, and steered him away from Rosi’s corrupt brother Doflamingo; as for Koala, it isn’t really revealed until the midst of the Raid on Onigashima that Koala taught Nico Robin a thing or two about fighting, and how to use Fish-Man Karate.
Each of these Leaders boasts its own unique effect that helps mold your deckbuilding. Raleigh’s effect limits the cost of cards that can be in your deck, keeping you from playing any that are cost 5 or higher. Rosinante revolves around playing different Trafalgar Law cards, and Koala’s effect is centered around high-cost characters.
The other three Leaders are all characters that we see a bit more often: Kuzan, Sanji, and Roronoa Zoro all get their own new Leader cards in OP-12. These three were all students of someone in the series, and each of their teachers made a huge impact on who they are (and the values they carry with them when fighting). Kuzan was mentored by Garp, Sanji by Zeff, and Zoro by Mihawk. Each of their teachers appear on the Alternate Art Leaders, similar to Raleigh, Rosi, and Koala.
When it was revealed, the Kuzan Leader raised a ton of speculation about the deck’s competitive potential. The cycling ability is really powerful, and letting you draw cards is always a good thing in any card game. The big winner from this set, though, is the Green Roronoa Zoro Leader!
This card’s amazing, which, for a Green Leader, is saying something. And the artwork on BOTH versions of the card is something to behold. Having the main fighter of the Straw Hats in action for both variants of his Leader card was a smart move by Bandai.
Treasure Rare and the Big Chases
Treasure Rares were a trend that started in OP-06 for the Western Releases, and they’re continuing into OP-12. In fact, we’ve already learned what the English Treasure Rare will be…
This version of Sanji has so much going for it. I love the artwork because it shows our favorite chef getting ready to speak to his bride-to-be, just before he hears the news of the Big Mom family’s plan to take down the Vinsmoke family at the wedding. It’s a huge moment in the anime for Sanji fans, and this artwork does a wonderful job of representing the scene. It also helps that the card’s super playable in Vinsmoke Reiju decks.
Just like with any set, OP-12 has a Manga Rare card too. This one is super cool since it ties in with the secrets for the set: Jewelry Bonney!
This is the first time we’re seeing a Bonney manga card! The fact that this character’s finally getting a manga version makes sense when you consider everything that’s going on in the anime right now: that’s all I can say without giving away spoilers. The manga panels in the background of this card show scenes from the Egghead arc and Bonney’s backstory.
Finally, just like in OP-11, we have special rare cards that celebrate the anniversary of the One Piece Card Game. In OP-11 we got the Gear 5 Luffy Silver and Gold Rares that are worth well over $1000 each. Now in OP-12, we’ll get another set of Silver and Gold Special Rare cards; this time for the OP-09 Marshall.D.Teach, also known as Blackbeard!
I’m not a huge Blackbeard fan, but these cards are gorgeous. These two, along with the Bonney Manga, are going to be the three biggest hits of the set. Each one’s super tough to pull, and the only idea of a pull rate I can give you right now is “one in multiple cases.”
Needless to say, cracking any of these big hitters is a big deal.
Legacy of the Master is going to be an amazing set! There’s a ton of new cards that are coming in this release that will be sought after by collectors and players alike. Just make sure you head to your local game store and participate in that Release Event so you can get the Koby promo!
